Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma claimed that Shubman Gill could be the next big thing in Indian Cricket. The 23-year-old is having a great outing in 2023 with his bat and has cemented his place in the Indian team in all formats. Rohit said this before the ongoing World Test Championship final between India and Australia at the Oval, London.

Gill has been in tremendous form for the past few months as he went on to score 100s in all formats of the game, including a double ton against New Zealand in ODIs. He also ended up as a leading run scorer in the recently ended season of the Indian Premier League as he amassed 890 runs from 17 matches at an average of 59.33 with three centuries.

Australia scored 327 for 3 on Day 1

Talking about the match, Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bowl first on Day 1. The Indian bowlers got a dream start as Mohammed Siraj sent Usman Khawaja for a duck at the score of just 2 runs in 3.4 overs. After that, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne took the innings further by adding 69 runs for the second wicket. Warner got out in the 22nd over after scoring 43 runs off 60 balls hitting eight boundaries.

A couple of overs later, Labuschange was also dismissed by Mohammed Shami after scoring 26 runs off 62 balls with three boundaries. After that, Steve Smith and Travis Head took charge of the innings. Both the batter didn’t let any wicket fall for the rest of the day as they put up an unbeaten partnership of 251 runs for the fourth wicket.

Smith is five runs away from his century as he is unbeaten on 95 runs off 227 balls hitting 14 boundaries. While on the other hand, Head became the first batter to score a hundred in a WTC final as he is unbeaten on 146 runs off 156 balls with 22 fours and a maximum. Australia finished day 1 with 327 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 85 overs. For India, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur shared a wicket each.
