Tuesday, May 23, marked the start of the Playoff action in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the Qualifier 1 being played in the Chepauk Stadium in Delhi. The Chennai Super Kings squared off against the Gujarat Titans for a direct spot in the final of IPL 2023, to be played in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. CSK incidentally lost all of their three games against GT earlier in the IPL.

Talking of the game, the Gujarat Titans won the toss and elected to bowl first on a wicket that certainly favoured the fielding side. CSK went off to a blazing start with Devon Conway (40 off 34) and the aggressor Ruturaj Gaikwad (60 off 44) adding 87 runs for the first wicket. Ajinkya Rahane (17 off 10), Ambati Rayudu (17 off 9) and Ravindra Jadeja (22 off 16) all made quick contributions to lift the team total to a very respectable 172/7 in 20 overs.

CSK reached their 10th final in IPL history

Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma, two Indian fast bowlers who collectively had 2/28 and 2/31 stats in their four overs, returned for Gujarat Titans with two wickets. At the same time, Darshan Nalkande, Rashid Khan, and Noor Ahmed returned with one wicket each to guarantee that all GT bowlers had productive outings.

In reply, GT kept losing regular wickets. Shubman Gill, with 42 off 38, remained the top-scorer for the Titans, with Rashid Khan 30 off 15 leading one final charge. But GT could only manage 157 before being all out on the game's last ball. Ravindra Jadeja remained the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/18 from four overs. Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana and Deepak Chahar scalped two each, while Tushar Deshpande returned with one wicket as CSK won the game by 15 runs.

Next, in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League, the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants will square off in the eliminator to be played at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. The winner will take on Gujarat Titans in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in Qualifier 2 to determine who will face Chennai Super Kings in the grand finale of the season.
