Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir appears to be on the verge of returning to the team after a six-year absence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. On Monday, rumours circulated that Gambhir had been approached by KKR about returning home, where he had most of his success as a player and captain in the IPL.
From IPL 2011 to 2017, the former Indian captain was instrumental in the KKRs' success. The Kolkata-based team qualified for the playoffs for the first time under his captaincy and went on to win the championships in 2012 and 2014.
Will Gambhir be back at KKR?
Gautam Gambhir became a mentor with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022. Since then, he has been working as a coach for LSG. But fans on Twitter have voiced their wish to see Gambhir return to KKR as a member of the team management.
The rumours began on social media after it was reported that LSG head coach Andy Flower's contract had ended and that Justin Langer would take his place. Although there has been no official update from LSG on the contracts of its backroom staff members, many believe Gambhir should also depart LSG and return to KKR.
Gambhir's return will definitely inspire the KKR family. His leadership abilities, along with his combative but smart approach to the game, have left an indelible mark on KKR. His presence will assist both former comrades and current squad members, reigniting their enthusiasm and inspiring them to perform at their best. The fact that a team great might be returning will enhance morale, nurturing a strong, unified squad ready to face the rigours of the competition.
Gambhir's prospective return has tremendous emotional importance. It symbolises the reuniting of hearts, the reliving of treasured memories, and the rekindling of dreams. The possibility of seeing Gambhir in the famous purple and gold again fills KKR supporters with expectation, nostalgia, and joy. After all, cricket is a game of emotions as much as it is of ability and strategy. And Gautam Gambhir's comeback might write a lovely chapter in the great history of the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Here's how fans reacted
I don't think KKR desperately needs him, KKR is already a very loved and popular franchise, the only thing it can do is make KKR fans who were kind of dispersed into other franchises after the exit of GG from KKR to come back.

After GG's exit, LSG might become irrelevant.

Gg was the guy that kept lsg relevant even when KLR was injured, would be a mistake to let him go

With his presence itβs just too vile a side to support !
Its better to release Russell Narine and utilise that money to other foreign players....not on coaches and staffs
