England all-rounder Moeen Ali will not take the field on Day 2 of the fifth Ashes Test match at the Kennington Oval, as he suffered a groin injury when he was batting for England on the first day. He did not field in the evening session as a result of the injury.
With putting into bat first England struggled as they were bundled out for 283 runs in the first innings in less than 55 overs before. The experienced spinner came out to bat at number three and scored 34 runs even as England lost a few quick wickets upfront in the morning session.
Moeen Ali probably played his last Test
England will be forced to play without their star spinner on Friday because of his absence, and the hosts plan to turn to part-timer Joe Root to cover the void. Additionally, Moeen will not be allowed to bat at No. 3 in England's second innings, which means either Root or Harry Brook will have to move up to fill the position. The 36-year-old has taken six wickets at an average of 64.5 in this series.
Given that Moeen was dragged out of retirement for this Ashes and has not indicated that he intends to continue playing beyond it, the injury suggests that he may have bowled his final ball in Test cricket. His teammate Harry Brook stated, "That was his decision really. As soon as the physio left the pitch he was like "should I just tee off now? And I said you should've been doing that from the start. He is one of the best power hitters in the world, and we have seen that in franchise cricket and white-ball cricket."
The batter further added, "I don't think he's too good at the minute. Hopefully, he can come out there and bowl some overs for us tomorrow, or get some runs in the next innings. He's been a vital player for us and maybe hasn't done as well as he would have wanted to. He's been a very vital player for us in this series, a top player. Hopefully, he's alright and gets well soon."

Yesterday he played a good small innings and the six he hit on Cummins bowling was superb. Cummins kept testing his with length ball and it was swinging quite well and Moo was not able to judge where to play pic.twitter.com/t4AFX63l1w
