The squad for the Test series against the West Indies were recently announced and one of the major highlights from the squad was the missing of former India vice-captain Cheteshwar Pujara. But it seems that he has another big stage to prove his mettle as it is certainly not the end of the road for the veteran India batter. The Duleep Trophy semifinal matches, which are set to be played between West Zone against Central Zone and North Zone against South Zone, are now taking place.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium and Alur Cricket Stadium are the venues for both these matches. It's interesting how the opening innings of both games had a similar outcome, with minimal scoring. Prithvi Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Suryakumar Yadav—all West Zone players who were India Test rejects who returned with poor scores in the first innings.
There is no wrong in saying that the Semifinal of the Duleep Trophy will serve as a boon for these players if they want to get their chances for the national side.
Pujara and Surya, though, have made apologies by scoring magnificent half-centuries in their second essay. Pujara was defensive as usual, getting an unbroken 50 off 103 balls, while Surya was adventurous, scoring 52 runs off just 58 deliveries. West Zone finished the second day with 149/3 after 39 overs, having amassed a sizable lead of 92 runs after the first innings, and are currently in an excellent position.
In order to make a comeback to the national team, Pujara has returned to domestic cricket after being benched for the next West Indies Test series. However, Suryakumar Yadav, who was on the standby list for the WTC Final, lost his spot, and he will benefit from a strong performance as well. Another highlight from the match was Shivam Mavi, who took six wickets for 43 runs and helped the Central Zone’s side to be in the game.
Here is how Twitter reacted to this performance from Cheteshwar Pujara who has certainly made a mark from his brilliant fightback;
Guy scores in domestic,scores in county cricket but bottles for ICT 😭
