Doubleheader Wednesday in the IPL 2023 had an underwhelming start as the first match of the day between Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings had to be called off due to rain. The game saw a brilliant half-century by Ayush Badoni, which remained a one-man effort from the LSG batters. Both teams were awarded a point each after the game failed to produce a result.

In contrast, the day's second game started with some friendly banter during the toss between the two teams' skippers (Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings), Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. Mumbai Indians won the toss, and Rohit Sharma revealed he chose to bowl on the recommendation of Shikhar Dhawan.

Punjab Kings took advantage of Mumbai's toss call and posted a humungous 214/3 in 20 overs. Keeping Prabhsimran Singh's underwhelming 9 off 7 aside, every other Punjab batter contributed. Liam Livingston top-scored with 82 off 42, followed by Jitesh Sharma with 49 off 27. Matt Short added 27 off 26, while Shikhar Dhawan was handy with 30 off 20. For Mumbai Indians, Piyush Chawla picked up 2/29 in his four overs, while Arshad Khan bagged the third wicket while going for 48 runs in his four overs.

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav's partnership was key for MI

In reply, MI lost skipper Rohit Sharma for a duck. However, they did not let that affect their plans for the chase. Ishan Kishan smashed 75 off 41, while impact player Suryakumar Yadav added 66 off 31, taking Mumbai close to victory. Ultimately, Tilak Varma, with 26 off 10 and Tim David, with 19 off 10, took their team over the finish line by six wickets. For Punjab, impact player Nathan Ellis took two wickets, while Rishi Dhawan and Arshdeep Singh had one scalp each.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad will thereafter play host to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. After suffering three straight defeats, the Sunrisers turned things around by narrowly defeating the Delhi Capitals in their recent match. In addition, in their previous game, the Knight Riders' two-game winning streak was snapped with a defeat at the hands of the Gujarat Titans. They would be especially motivated to get back to winning ways.
