The action returned in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday, May 7. The day’s first game was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium between Gujarat Titans (GT) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). At the same time, the second game will feature Rajasthan Royals (RR) locking horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Talking of the first game, the visitors, LSG, won the toss and elected to field first. However, GT made sure they capitalised on the opportunity to bat first. Wriddhiman Saha opened the batting alongside Shubman Gill, and both batters registered 80+ scores and were unlucky to miss out on their centuries.

Gujarat Titans continue to top the standings with 16 points

The opening partnership yielded 142 runs. Hardik Pandya, with 25 off 15 and David Miller, with 21 off 12, added handy runs, but the stars were Gill and Saha, with scores of 94* off 51 and 81 off 43, respectively. For LSG, Moshin Khan and Avesh Khan returned with one wicket apiece in a forgettable bowling effort.

In reply, LSG started well, with openers Kyle Mayers (48 off 32) and Quinton de Kock (70 off 41) stitching an 88-run partnership. However, leaving the two openers, the LSG batters found it hard to get going. Their innings were wrapped up at 171/7. Only Aysuh Badoni (21 off 11) and Deepak Hooda (11 off 11) were the other batters in the double-digits. For GT, Mohit Sharma remained the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/29 in four overs. Noor Ahmed, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami returned with one wicket apiece as GT won the game by 56 runs.

Next, in the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will host the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. While KKR are coming off a narrow victory against SRH at home, PBKS will look to bounce back after a defeat at the hands of the Mumbai Indians (MI) by six wickets at home.
