The fourth day of the Indian T20 League 2023 witnessed a thrilling contest between the four-time champions Chennai and the Lucknow-based franchise on Monday, April 3 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Lucknow won the toss and opted to bowl first but the Chennai batters showed their brilliant batting ability.

Chennai openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway started aggressively and stitched a 110-run partnership for the first wicket. Gaikwad smashed an outstanding half-century and scored 57 runs off just 31 balls, which included 3 fours and 4 huge sixes. On the other hand, Conway fell three runs short of his fifty and departed after scoring 47 runs off 29 balls and smashed 5 fours and 2 sixes.

However, later the middle order couldn't keep up with the pace, but Shivam Dube, who was struggling initially, later smashed 27 runs off just 16 balls, while hitting 3 maximums. Ambati Rayudu also contributed at the end as he scored 27 runs off 14 balls, which included 2 fours and 2 sixes. However, the former Indian captain MS Dhoni stole the limelight after smashing two back-to-back sixes against Mark Wood and took the team to a humongous total of 217 runs.

Brilliant bowling by Chennai in death overs

For Lucknow, Ravi Bishnoi was the best bowler as he took 3 wickets and conceded only 28 runs in his 4 overs quota. Wood also took 3 wickets but conceded 49 runs in 4 overs. Chasing the target, Kyle Mayers had Chennai bowlers silenced early on in the chase as it was again an extraordinary display of power hitting from him, bringing up fifty off just 21 balls. But the game turned around as soon as spin was brought on, with Moeen Ali bowling a superb spell, and Mitchell Santner doing a brilliant job as well.

Lucknow were 73/0 after the first 5 overs but their batting lineup collapsed to 136/5 after 14 overs, with Moeen picking up a wicket in each of his four overs. Nicholas Pooran tried to take his team to victory but fell off to Tushar Despande in the death overs. In the end, the team in Yellow won the match by 12 runs.
