Rohit Sharma announced as T20I captain

India is currently playing Australia in the 5-match T20I series. The majority of the senior players were part of the ODI World Cup 2023 squad have been rested for this series. Suryakumar Yadav has been leading the side, in the absence of Rohit Sharma. There were speculations that the Indian captain might not be leading the side in white-ball cricket. The selection committee led by former India pacer Ajit Agarkar have announced the captains for the white-ball format of India for the South Africa tour. 

Rohit Sharma will be leading the side in the shortest format of the game, while KL Rahul will lead the ODI leg of the tour. The 36-year-old batter led India to their first final in the major tournament since 2013. Though India lost in the final against the Aussies they performed exceptionally well and aggressive brand of cricket throughout the tournament. 

Virat Kohli has not been included in the white ball side as the former India skipper informed the Indian Cricket Board of his decision to take a break. India will be playing three T20 internationals, and three ODIs, followed by two Test matches during the tour against the Proteas. Kohli will be joining the side for the two tests as the batter is trying to reduce the workload ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup. 

India's possible squad for South Africa tour

A source said, "He (Kohli) has informed the Indian Cricket Board and selectors that he needs a break from white-ball cricket and he will get back to them about when he wants to play white ball cricket next. At the moment he has informed the BCCI that he will be playing red-ball cricket, which means he is available for selection for the two Test matches in South Africa."

As per the reports, from the Indian Cricket Board, Sanju Samson has been picked for the Indian ODI team. Rajat Patidar, who recovered from injury has also found a place in the Indian ODI squad. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, and R Ashwin make their way into the Test team. With leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been picked in the T20I squad. Surya has been rested as the batter is playing continuous cricket, Shreyas Iyer gets back in the red-ball format with no place for veteran batters Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara.
