MS Dhoni is the most successful captain of India and the only skipper to win all three major trophies. Dhoni was the last captain for India to win a major trophy in 2013 and since then no captain has been able to win it the closest, was Rohit Sharma who led the side to the first final in 10 years eventually losing to Australia. The 'Captain Cool' often called by the fans is known for his calm nature on the field and smart decisions as well.
The Indian Cricket Board has decided to pay tribute to the former India captain, as they are set to retire the No. 7 jersey. The shirt became compatible with Dhoni along with time. The No.7 marks the significance of the former skipper's birthday, which is July 7th. Previously, great Sachin Tendulkar's No.10 jersey was retired by the Board, now in honour of the contributions of the 42-year-old they have decided to retire the No.7 jersey.
The Board has informed the players in the Indian team that they cannot wear No. 7 on their back while donning the Indian jersey, just like no one was allowed to pick the No. 10 shirt. All-rounder Shardul Thakur did wear the No. 10 shirt for a short period but as the fans raged at the Board for letting him wear the iconic No.10 the board decided to retire it.
The Indian Cricket Board has decided to retire Dhoni's T-shirt: Indian Cricket Board official
A senior Board official said, "The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick MS Dhoni's Number 7 jersey. The Indian Cricket Board has decided to retire Dhoni's T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can't get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers."
"At present, 60-odd numbers are designated to the regulars in the Indian team and those in contention. So even if a player is out of the team for about a year or so, we don't give away his number to a new player. That means a recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from."
