Rohit Sharma to captain India

India is currently hosting England for a 5-match Test series. Their next up is the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, which is scheduled in the West Indies and USA. Ahead of the 3rd Test, the Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will be captaining India at the upcoming major tournament, he also believes that the Men in Blue will win the trophy under his captaincy as well. He confirmed the news during the inauguration of the Niranjan Shah Stadium on February 14.

The announcement was made in the presence of India captain Rohit, coach Rahul Dravid, and chairman of the men's senior selection committee Ajit Agarkar. Following the event, the Indian Cricket Board secretary discussed in depth the decision to give Rohit the charge for the T20 World Cup.

Rohit hadn't played a T20I since India was knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals by England, but he made an impressive comeback against Afghanistan. After being dismissed for ducks in the first two matches, Rohit scored his fifth T20I century in a thrilling series decider in Bengaluru. He had captained the side fearlessly in the ODI World Cup 2023 last year. The Indian captain was very aggressive with his batting, giving India the perfect start in the powerplay.

I would like to say that I am confident: Jay Shah

Shah said during his address at the event, "We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts thereby winning 10 matches in a row. I would like to say that I am confident that India will lift the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Barbados."

"Rohit was captaining (in the past and in other formats) and he came back for the Afghanistan series after a year, which means we were going to let him continue forward. Hardik Pandya will definitely be the vice-captain. When Hardik was injured in the World Cup, who else can we give the captaincy? In the third T20I against Afghanistan, India were 22/4 and the way Rohit Sharma took the team to 212/4, we can’t question much about him, right? He has the ability, as I said, we won ten games in the ODI World Cup. We didn’t win the final, but it’s part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins."
