The 2023 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is the sixteenth edition of the tournament and, as usual, is being played in the T20 format. The teams are divided into five groups, with Kerala standing out in Group B as they remain unbeaten, having won all five of their games. Meanwhile, India is having a remarkable run in the 2023 World Cup, winning all five of their opening matches and leading the tournament.

Despite India's overall success, one notable omission from the World Cup squad was the star wicketkeeper-batter, Sanju Samson. In response, Samson is making a strong statement in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he notched up his second consecutive half-century.

In a recent match between Kerala and Odisha at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Sanju Samson showcased his class by scoring a dazzling 55 from 31 balls. Batting at number 4, he arrived at the crease when his team was 90-2 after 11.1 overs and remained at the crease throughout the innings, guiding Kerala to a formidable total of 183/4 in their allotted 20 overs. This innings marked his second consecutive fifty in the SMAT 2023.

Samson scored unbeaten half century

In Kerala's match against Chandigarh on October 21 (Saturday), Sanju Samson emerged as the top scorer for Kerala as he hit a sensational 52 from just 32 balls in an innings studded with 4 fours and 3 sixes. He was the star of the show as Kerala posed 193 and then won by 7 runs. In Kerala's next game against Sikkim, Samson did not come out to bat.

Sanju Samson last played for India in the T20I series against Ireland in August. His inconsistent run of form in the tour to West Indies and Ireland, forced him to be dropped from the Asia Cup 2023, the series against Australia, Asian Games, and then subsequently the World Cup squad. With the 2024 T20 World Cup on the horizon, his purple patch in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023 is a blessing in disguise for him.
