Virat Kohli has been one of the finest captains for India. The former India skipper was dropped from his captaincy after the failure of the 2021 T20 World Cup. Kohli stepped down from the T20I captaincy. The Indian Cricket Board President Sourav Ganguly was slammed for removing the star batter from leadership roles from all formats. The fans lashed out at Ganguly for the decision. The 35-year-old batter only wanted to captain in ODIs and Tests.
Ganguly has now clarified the incident, as he wanted one captain in the white-ball format. He clarified that he did not remove the former India skipper. Kohli went on to announce, in January 2022, that he would step down from Test captaincy. Ganguly, they then received massive backlash on social media after the incident.
He in a TV show which is hosted by the former India skipper clarified his point of Kohli's removal of captaincy. The 51-year-old clarified that he suggested to Kohli that it is easier to have separate captains for limited-overs and Tests and has no hand in sacking the star India batter.
You step down from entire white-ball cricket: Sourav Ganguly
He said, "I pushed Rohit Sharma a bit to take up the captaincy role because he wasn't interested to lead in all three formats of the game. So, maybe I have a bit of contribution in that but no matter who is administrating, it's the players who perform well on the field. I was appointed as the President of Indian Cricket Board to work for the betterment of Indian cricket, this is a small part of it."
Ganguly said on the reality show named Dadagiri Unlimited Season 10, "I didn't remove Virat from captaincy. I have told this a lot of times. He was not interested to lead in T20Is. So, after he made that decision, I told him, if you're not interested to lead in T20Is, it's better if you step down from entire white-ball cricket. Let there be a white-ball captain and a red-ball captain."
