Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head into the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the defending champions. MS Dhoni helped his side win their fifth title after beating Gujarat Titans (GT) in the finals. This could be the last season for MS Dhoni making it an emotional season for cricket fans across India.

It was a memorable IPL Auction 2024 for CSK as they spent around INR 30.4 Crores and made some outstanding buys. Shardul Thakur was back playing in Yellow after being released by KKR at the end of last season. Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra have joined the Kiwi brigade for the new season.

Mustafizur Rahman is the kind of bowler Dhoni will love due to his ability to change the pace of the ball. In this article, we cast a closer look at the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats of Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2024 season.

Strength – Well Rounded Side

There is no doubt that Chennai Super Kings for the first time have stacked their team up with superstars. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, and Rachin Ravindra can open the innings for the men in yellow. Ajinkya Rahane, Moeen Ali, and Ravindra Jadeja can bat well in the middle order. The pace and spin departments are also looking well covered ahead of the IPL 2024 season.

Weakness- MS Dhoni’s diminishing powers

Once known as a terrific striker of the ball, MS Dhoni hasn’t been the same batter for the last few years. Coupled with his recent struggles with injuries, the Chennai Super Kings skipper might sadly find it difficult to see out the season. MS Dhoni’s diminishing powers while running between the wickets and end-overs hitting could come to haunt CSK big time.

Opportunities – Chance for youngsters to step up

With Ambati Rayudu now out of the picture Chennai Super Kings need a young enforcer in the middle-order. MS Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane, and Ravindra Jadeja are in the final lap of their respective careers. This gives a chance for a talent like Nishant Sindhu or Shaik Rasheed to step up for Chennai Super Kings in the coming IPL 2024 campaign.

Weakness – Too many fragile players and lack of Indian support seamer

Apart from MS Dhoni’s fitness issues, Deepak Chahar and Mukesh Choudhary have been grappling with injuries. This could be one of the biggest weaknesses for Chennai Super Kings next season. There is also a concern about the backup Indian seam bowlers that CSK has. Shardul Thakur’s confidence has taken a massive hit Tushar Deshpande is inconsistent. Simrajeet Singh hasn’t got much game time for either CSK or New Delhi to showcase his forms ahead of the new season.
