Chandika Hathurusinghe, the Bangladesh coach, has slammed the Bangladesh Premier League calling it a circus. As per the coach, the tournament has nothing new to offer and some of the players are not up to the mark. If the tournament continues in this form, soon people will get bored and stop watching it.
Hathurusinghe said, "We [Bangladesh] don't have a proper T20 tournament. This sounds very odd. When I am watching the BPL, I sometimes turn off the TV. Some players are not even of the [required] class. I have a big issue with the current system. The Apex Cricket Body need to step in. There has to be some regulations. A player is playing one tournament and then he is playing another tournament. It is like a circus. Players will talk about opportunities, but that's not right. People will lose interest. I have lost interest." quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.
This year's BPL saw a lot of reliance on overseas players in terms of batting and bowling. Even though the local players are giving their best, the result is not evident. As the players are playing multiple tournaments at one time, it becomes uneasy and difficult for them as well. Thus, the tournament should have some regulations in order to keep the momentum of the tournament going.
'My suggestion is that we have another tournament before the BPL' - Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe on BPL
Chandika Hathurusinghe is quite clear about his priorities in life. The Bangladesh coach wants another tournament before the start of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) where only the local players will play. This tournament will help the local players get much-needed exposure before the grand tournament.
"My suggestion is that we have another tournament before the BPL. The franchises do what they want. Some of the best players are not playing. Then how do you expect the Bangladesh team to be up with the other teams? I am fighting a steep battle," Hathurusinghe was quoted saying to ESPNcricinfo.
