The much-awaited clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) which is famously known as ‘El Classico’ of cricket took place in the 49th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. CSK have finally defeated MI  by 6 wickets at Chepauk since their return in 2018.

Talking about the match, CSK skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bowl first and his decision proved right as the four-time champions restricted MI to a total of just 139 runs, with the help of an outstanding performance by the bowlers. MI opened the innings with a new pair of Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green, but that didn’t work for them as Tushar Deshpande cleaned Green in the 2nd over on just 6 runs.

Rohit came to bat at no. 3 and continued his poor form and walked back to the pavilion on another 3-ball-duck of the season. The five-time champions lost their first three wickets inside the powerplay, however, later, Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera steadied the ship and stitched a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Wadhera smashed a fifty but failed to show intent as CSK bowlers never let them open their hands as they were bowling with tight line and length. Matheesha Pathirana was the highest wicket-taker as he picked up 3 wickets and conceded only 15 runs in his 4 overs quota.

A brilliant all-round performance by CSK

Chasing the target, CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad gave a cracking start to the team but was dismissed on 30 runs by the leggie Piyush Chawla, who is having a tremendous season so far. Gaikwad smashed 4 fours and 2 sixes in his short knock of 30 runs off just 16 balls. Later, Devon Conway and Ajinkya Rahane took the chase ahead and made it a lot easier for the upcoming batters.

MI bowlers managed to take a few wickets in the middle but that didn't affect CSK much as at the end Shivam Dube and skipper Dhoni finished the match with 14 balls to spare and now jumped to the 2nd position in the points table with 6 wins.
