After the confirmation of two teams from Group A and B, it was time for Group C to finalise its two Round of 16 teams for the FIFA World Cup. Let's look at how the two games panned out in Qatar.
Tunisia vs France
France had already qualified for the Round of 16 with 6 points in 2 matches. Tunisia meanwhile needed a win if they wanted to keep the hopes of qualification alive. France looked overconfident from the get-go as they came out with 9 changes from their last match.
The match was a closely fought affair but Tunisia's captain Wahbi Khazri broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. France threw men forward and looked like coming with a goal in the injury time. The goal by Antoine Griezman however was scrapped off after VAR found the France attacker to be offside. The result brought Tunisia their first victory at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Despite this loss, however, France were able to qualify for the next round.
Australia vs Denmark
Australia and Denmark also had chance to go into the next round with a win. Both teams played a nervy 0-0 in the first half but it was Australia who took the lead in the second half. Mathew Lackie scored a wonderful solo goal in the 60th minute to give Australia the lead against the European team.
Denmark huffed and puffed but could not provide any answer to Australia's goal despite multiple attempts. As a result of this win, Australia came out with 6 points in 3 matches and qualified for the Round of 16 at FIFA World Cup 2022.
Teams who have qualified for the Round of 16 so far: Netherlands, Senegal, England, USA, France, and Australia.
