It’s one thing to score a significant number of goals within one’s career, or even one season. But it’s a totally different thing to score a lofty amount within one tournament – especially the FIFA World Cup. For generations, countries from all over the world have put their best foot forward in the quadrennial tournament. And every now and then, there is a player who manages to surpass all odds.

Here are the five players who have scored the most goals within a single iteration of the tournament.

1. Just Fontaine

Just Louis Fontaine is a French former professional footballer. A prolific forward, he is best known for scoring the most goals in a single edition of the FIFA World Cup, with thirteen in six matches in 1958, which still stands as the record for the most goals scored in a single edition.

2. Sandor Kocsis

Kocsis was the top goalscorer in the 1954 World Cup with 11 goals including two hat tricks. In the opening game, he scored his first hat trick of the tournament against South Korea as Hungary cruised to a 9–0 win. He was also the first player to score two hat tricks in a World Cup.

3. Gerd Muller

After a successful season at Bayern Munich, Gerd Muller scored ten goals at the 1970 FIFA World Cup for West Germany where he received the Golden Boot as the top goalscorer. In 1972, he won the UEFA European Championship and was the top goalscorer, scoring two goals in the final.

4. Ademir Marques de Menezes

Ademir Marques de Menezes is best known for his exploits in the 1950 World Cup held in his native Brazil. Playing in an outstanding forward trio involving Zizinho and Jair he won the Golden Boot as the top scorer in the competition with 9 goals, and he also helped the team with 6 assists in the tournament.

5. Eusébio da Silva Ferreira

Eusébio da Silva Ferreira helped Portugal reach third place at the 1966 FIFA World Cup, being the top goalscorer of the tournament with nine goals. He won the Ballon d'Or in 1965 and was runner-up in 1962 and 1966.
