Atletico Madrid stun defending champions Real Madrid in Copa del Rey RO16 match

Atletico Madrid stun Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 match. This was the second Madrid derby under a month with the first one finishing 5-3, where the Los Blancos defeated their neighbours in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup. Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme were the heroes for the side as two goals by them in the extra time helped them secure a place in the quarter-final of the tournament. 

Griezmann who has been in sensational form was awarded with the honour after becoming the club's highest goalscorer, his family came and presented him the honour ahead of the game. The French superstar has been in sensational form in the 2023 year and he showed his class once again in the all-important Madrid Deby. The 32-year-old has now scored 175 goals for the side in the 369 games he played for the club. 

In the 39th minute, winger Samuel Lino opened the score for the hosts on a counter-attack, tapping in from close range after central defender Antonio Rudiger miskicked the ball clearing backwards, gifting him the ball for a easy goal. Madrid equalised before the break when Luka Modric's crossed free-kick dragged Jan Oblak out of his goal. The Slovenian, attempting to reach the ball but unable to catch it, ended up with the his touch as it sailed into his own net and making it an own goal.

Griezmann steals the show

The second half began with another error In the 57th minute, midfielder Eduardo Camavinga send a terrible pass back to his own area, confusing goalkeepers Andriy Lunin and Rudiger, and the ball fell to Alvaro Morata, who tapped it into an empty net. In the dying minutes of the game Morata missed a sitter from close range, helping a Real counter-attack. Jude Bellingham crossed to Joselu, who headed the equaliser to send the game to extra time. 

Griezmann showed his magic in the 100th minute, stealing the ball from Vinicius Jr on the halfway line and scoring via the right channel and into the box. Riquelme sealed the win in the 119th minute with a clean finish and helping the Los Colchoneros to win the game 4-2.
