Chetan Sharma has returned to the Indian Cricket Board fold and taken over as the chairman of the North Zone squad, four months after he left his position as the head of the selection committee for squad India. The meeting to select the North Zone team for the Duleep Trophy, which is set to begin on June 28, was presided over by the former India all-rounder.
According to Cricbuzz, Chetan served as the chairman of the selection committee that chose the team on June 15th. Chetan, the first Indian to get a hat-trick in a 50-over World Cup, left his position as top selector after a news channel's undercover investigation.
During the interview, the 57-year-old revealed some stunning details that caused him to resign. It's interesting to note that the BCCI fired Chetan and his selection committee after Team India's disappointing showing at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Chetan reapplied for the position, and in January he was reinstated as the chief selector.
North Zone will be led by Mandeep Singh in the Duleep Trophy 2023
Mandeep Singh was named captain of the North Zone team by the Chetan Sharma-led committee. The squad's biggest omission is Yash Dhull, who played for India A and the Rest of India in the 2022–23 season. The IPL star Prabhsimran Singh, as well as Prashant Chopra, Manan Vohra, and Sidharth Kaul, among others, made the cut.
The lone Test-experienced player in the squad is the all-arounder Jayant Yadav. He was a member of the 2022 South Africa ODI series team. Jayant participated in the Sri Lanka Test match at Mohali last year as well. One of the backup players is Nehal Wadhera, who gained attention for his tough batting for the Mumbai Indians. The North Zone team's head coach has been named Ajay Ratra.
