The Mumbai-based franchise started its Women’s T20 League campaign with a cracking win over Gujarat by a huge margin of 143 runs on Saturday, March 4 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The fans were expecting a thrilling and exciting opener in the much-awaited tournament but that didn’t happen as Mumbai’s all-round performance destroyed Gujarat.
Mumbai skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was named the player of the match for her breathtaking 65 runs knock off just 30 balls. Mumbai also provided a great show with the bowl as they dismissed 4 Gujarat batters inside the powerplay. Meanwhile, there were 5 such moments that grabbed many eyeballs during the match.
5. Beth Mooney retired hurt in the first over of the 2nd innings
Gujarat skipper Beth Mooney had a huge responsibility as she was the only one who could anchor the huge chase of 207 runs. Unfortunately, Mooney twisted her ankle while turning back for the second run in the first over. The physio had to intervene and she walked back to the pavilion as the injury looked serious.
4.Saika Ishaque'a 4-fer
The uncapped Indian left-arm spinner came out of the syllabus for Gujarat as she produced a great spell. Ishaque picked 4 wickets and conceded just 11 runs in 3.1 overs. The Gujarat batter looked clueless in front of her variations and were seen scratching their heads. Earlier, Harmanpreet heaped praise on her, and now it looked like that she was absolutely right about her.
3. Harmanpreet Kaur’s 7 consecutive fours
Harmanpreet’s 65 runs knock included 14 boundaries in which she smashed 7 fours in a row. She was only breathing fire with her bat and looked in no mood to show mercy on Gujarat bowlers. She smashed four boundaries on Monica Patel's bowling and the remaining three came in Ashleigh Gardner's over.
2. Gujarat all out on 64 runs
Despite having many stars cricketer from international cricket, the Gujarat-based franchise looked like a pretty average team in front of Mumbai as they lost 4 wickets in the powerplay, which completely pushed them back and they never recovered from there. They weren’t expecting this kind of start, however, they will have another chance on Sunday to bounce back against UP.
1. Harmanpreet Kaur’s successful wide review
There are a lot of incidents when a team had to bear the umpire’s wrong decision whether it is about a wide ball or a no-ball. However, in the ongoing Women’s T20 League, teams can challenge the umpire’s decision of wide and no-ball. Harmanpreet used the rule for the first time and it proved to be the right decision as the decision was reversed.
