The five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have proved once again why are they called the talent factory of Indian cricket as they discovered another upcoming superstar named Akash Madhwal, who displaced a breathtaking performance in the eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2023 and helped the team to win the match by a huge margin of 81 runs.
Madhwal picked up 5 wickets while conceding only 5 runs and with this brilliant spell, he has equalled the former legendary Indian cricketer Anil Kumble’s record for the most economical fifer in the history of the cash-rich league. Interestingly, Madhwal’s IPL journey started as a net bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), however, he didn’t get a chance there and he talked about the same in the post-match conference.
"I was with RCB in 2019 as a net bowler, I didn't get a chance there. Then I joined MI and got my chances here. Captain Rohit Sharma motivates me a lot. He said that he will know the bowling ability of my yorker and call to bowl at the right time." Madhwal said after the match.
Hoping to do well in the coming games and want to end up as champions: Akash Madhwal
Madhwal left his ordinary engineering job to play professionally. He gained experience playing tennis-ball cricket in Uttarakhand, where he also developed his yorker bowling technique. His love for bowling the Yorker persisted as he advanced to more competitive cricket levels. When he joined the domestic Uttarakhand team in 2018, his career at the highest level officially began.
“I have been practising a lot and waiting for my opportunity. I have done engineering, cricket is my passion and I have been waiting for this since 2018. When we practice in the nets, the management gives us the target and we try to execute our best. Hoping to do well in the coming games and want to end up as champions. The wicket of Nicholas Pooran was most pleasing for me.” Madhwal said.
