The five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) clashed against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the eliminator match of the ongoing 16th edition of the Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, May 24. MI showed why are they called the most successful team in the league as they thrashed LSG by 81 runs and LSG lost another eliminator which is two in a row since 2022.

Talking about the match, MI won the toss and opted to bat first but they had a bad start as they lost both their openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan inside the mandatory powerplay. However, later Suryakumar Yadav and Cameron Green who scored at 10rpo consistently put the pressure on LSG. But just when MI were looking to take the game away, Naveen-ul-Haq came back and took both batters out in the same over.ย

When Tim David fell, MI were forced to bring in an Impact sub, Nehal Wadhera to help extend their batting. That move paid off as Wadhera scored a crucial 23 and helped the team to achieve a fighting total of 182 runs. LSG apart from the last over which went for 14 did well with Naveen and Yash Thakur taking 7 wickets between themselves.ย

Chasing the target, LSG also had a horrible start as they lost their openers inside the powerplay. Dropping Quinton de Kock cost them a lot as Perak Mankad and Kyle Mayers both failed to provide a great start. However, in-from allrounder Marcus Stoinis showed some cracking shots and made sure that the team get some benefits of the powerplay.

However, LSG kept losing wickets from the other end as the skipper Krunal Pandya himself failed to do anything special in the big match. LSG suffered a massive blow when Stoinis got run out in the 12th over of the 2nd innings after which all the responsibility came to Deepak Hooda's shoulder who was already suffering from poor form and unfortunately, he also got run out. MI young speedster Akash Madhwal performed brilliantly and picked up a fifer after conceding only 5 runs.
