Former Indian cricketer Hrishiesh Kantikar is currently serving as an interim head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team. However, it is now being reported that he is soon set to be replaced by the former England woman cricketer Charlotte Edwards. There are also some reports that former Indian cricketer Amol Muzumdar is also in contention to become the coach.

Meanwhile, former Indian men's cricket team head coach Gary Kirsten, who guided the team to their 2nd World Cup in 2011, has refused to become the coach of the Indian women's team. A report from ESPNcricinfo stated that the Indian Cricket Board were keen to appoint him but his commitment within the IPL and other leagues didn’t allow him to take the responsibility.

“ESPNcricinfo has learnt the board was keen on appointing Gary Kirsten for the top job but wasn't able to get him onboard due to his commitments in the IPL and other leagues. Among those in contention are Amol Muzumdar, the former Mumbai captain, and Hrishikesh Kanitkar, the former India allrounder and current interim head coach. The search for a ‘big international name’ is believed to be one of the reasons for the delay in appointment,” a report on the website quoted as saying by Zee News.

The new coach is expected to have 2-year contract

The Indian Cricket Board is expected to provide the new coach with a two-year deal. It should be mentioned that two significant major world competitions are coming up, and the Women in Blue are eager to do well. The 20-20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in Bangladesh, and the 2025 World Cup, which will be held in India, are two of the major events taking place over the next two years.

“The new coach is likely to be given a two-year term, to begin with, especially because there are two major world events – the 20-20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2024 and the 50-over World Cup in India in 2025 – within this period,” the report added.
