Legendary footballer Frank Lampard, a former manager and player for Chelsea, has rejoined the team as a "caretaker manager" for the remainder of the current campaign. The club, on Thursday, issued a statement confirming the same. The change occurs a few days after their previous manager Graham Potter was fired.
Notably, Lampard has not held a managerial position since January, when Chelsea's Premier League opponents Everton fired him. The 44-year-old, who also happens to be the club's all-time leading scorer, previously served as the Blues' manager from July 2019 to January 2021.
"It's a pretty easy decision for me. This is my club. I have a lot of emotions and feelings. It was a surprise in terms of you never know what decision the club will make. There's been a lot of change in the Premier League this season. It's a big challenge, but aren't they all? I have complete sympathy for all managers that lose jobs. I'm ready to put my work into this challenge and take it day by day," Lampard told a press conference minutes after his appointment was announced.
It was an amazing buzz to be back at Stamford Bridge: Frank Lampard
The Blues secured a fourth-place finish and advanced to the FA Club Final under Lampard, a club legend, who had a reassuringly successful tenure as the manager. His subsequent season, which began after the transfer ban was lifted but didn't live up to the expectations he had set for himself, and his dismissal resulted from the club winning only two of their final eight games and slipping to ninth place.
"I was there on Tuesday, it was the first time I'd been back since I left previously. It was an amazing buzz to be back at Stamford Bridge. I've come with a belief I can come and help the cause until the end of the season. I'll give my utmost to give the fans what they want until the end of the season. There's a lot of talent in the squad. I'm excited to work with that talent and to help them." Lampard said.
