India beat Afghanistan by 6 wickets

India beat Afghanistan by 6 wickets in the 1st T20I in Mohali, on Thursday. Rohit Sharma had won the toss and was elected to field first with the Men in Blue skipper leading the side almost after 14 months. The 36-year-old opener last played in the shortest format in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England. Virat Kohli was not part of the 1st match as he rushed back home due to some emergency.

During the toss, the skipper forgot to name all the players who were not been of the playing XI. Avesh Khan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and Kuldeep Yadav are not in the XI for the first T20I. Jaiswal was expected to play in the series per the statement of head coach Rahul Dravid but he was ruled out at the last minute due to an injury.

The decision of bowling first was right as the dew factor was always a part of the game, especially in the second half as in Mohali the temperature is low and it's chilling with the bowlers struggling to have bowling as well. The Afghan openers captain Ibrahim Zadran and wicket-keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz started cautiously, Axar Patel was the one to get the breakthrough for India.

India's middle-order shines

Both the openers were back in the pavilion after stitching a 50-run partnership. With Shivam Dube picking up the second wicket. From 50/0 they were 57/3. A crucial partnership by Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi of 68 runs helped the visitors to go past the 120 runs mark. The latter scored 42 off 27 balls and Omarzai played the role of the anchor scoring 29 off 22. The 28 runs in the last three overs helped the Afghans score 158/5 in their 20 overs.

In reply, the Men in Blue had the worst possible start as the skipper was run out in the very first over after a miscommunication with his partner Shubman Gill. Rohit was furious after the run-out. The hosts also were struggling but the partnership between Dube and Tilak Verma of 44 runs helped them to a decent score. Jitesh Sharma's fiery knock of 31 helped India to almost run a ball before he was back. Dube was not out with a score of 60 off 40 balls and Rinku Singh had 16 runs.
