Pakistan and New Zealand locked horns in the 3rd match of the 5-match ODI series at the National Stadium in Karachi on Thursday. The hosts entered the game with a 2-0 lead following decisive triumphs in the Rawalpindi leg. The Men in Green took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series by defeating the Blackcaps in the 3rd ODI by 26 runs.
Tom Latham, the captain of New Zealand, won the toss and invited Pakistan to bat. The Men in Green lost Fakhar Zaman early, scoring only 19 runs. But later, Imam-ul-Haq and captain Babar Azam put together an outstanding 108-run stand for the second wicket, creating the groundwork for up-and-coming batters to show their hands.
After completing his fifty, Babar was dismissed for 54 runs, which included 3 fours and 1 six, thanks to the quick bowling of Matt Henry. Adma Milne removed Imam after he scored 90 runs, including 7 fours and 1 six, falling 10 runs short of his century and being dismissed.
Although Shadab Khan made a brief appearance at the end and Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha both made thirties, New Zealand never let anyone get away. As usual, their fielding was excellent, and Henry led the bowling attack with a three-fer. Everyone was pleased by rookie off-spinner Cole McConchie, and together they held Pakistan to 287 runs in total.
A brilliant all-round performance by Pakistan
Chasing the target, the Kiwis got off to a strong start, thanks to the openers Tom Blundell and Will Young, who put up 83 runs for the first wicket. Blundell persisted, but the outcome of the game was altered by his departure. Skipper Latham escaped a few run-out opportunities but was unable to capitalise on them as he departed after scoring 45 runs.
On the other hand, in his debut, Cole McConchie kept the visitors in the game, but he was given too much work. He remained unbeaten on 64 runs but couldn’t take his team to victory. Pakistan was outstanding on the pitch. They accomplished three run-outs, and Mohammad Wasim Jr., in particular, was fantastic, participating in a run-out, making an outstanding catch, and picking up 2 wickets as well.
