Rain forced the cancellation of the first of three one-day internationals between Bangladesh and Ireland, ensuring South Africa's participation in this year's Cricket World Cup. Without even taking the pitch, South Africa clinched the lone remaining direct qualification berth for the Cricket World Cup 2023. Ireland had three ODI Super League games against Bangladesh left to play, and victory would have qualified them automatically for the main event. However, the Proteas had already guaranteed a spot in the World Cup before the series was through.

Ireland needed to win all three of the series' games to compete against the Proteas for the final automatic World Cup qualifying spot via the ODI Super League. Rain prevented the Irish from responding to Bangladesh's 246/9 on Tuesday, so they must compete in final qualifying in June and July.

Bangladesh have already qualified for the ODI World Cup

The County Ground in Chelmsford, the home of English county team Essex, played in the rain at around 4.45 p.m. local time, with Ireland 65/3 after 16.3 overs. After Bangladesh was allowed to bat by Ireland in what appeared to be favourable batting conditions, Mushfiqur Rahim led the way with 61 off 70 balls for his 44th ODI half-century.

Josh Little had the best bowling statistics for Bangladesh with a 3-61, as Najmul Hossain Shanto added 44 and Towhid Hridoy scored 27 off 31 balls. In their response, Ireland got off to a shaky start, losing captain Andy Balbirnie (5) and Paul Stirling (15 in 10 balls) by the end of the fifth over.

By the time the covers were put on, Harry Tector, who scored 21, was joined in the center by Lorcan Tucker, who scored 2. Ireland had to bat for at least 20 overs to get a result. Bangladesh already had a spot reserved for them in the automatic qualifying round for India's upcoming Cricket World Cup in October and November.

Ireland earned 5 points despite no outcome, although they will now have to compete in the World Cup qualifying rounds. Ireland still has a chance to win the series with two games remaining at the same location on Friday and Sunday.
