Real Madrid’s centre-forward Karim Benzema posted an arcane message on his Instagram after Argentina’s Lionel Messi won the 2022 FIFA The Best Men's Player of the Year Award. Messi defeated Benzema and Kylian Mbappe to lift the trophy in Paris on Monday. Mbappe finished in second while Benzema finished in third position. The votes were given by the players, coaches and captains around the globe.
Messi gathered 52 points, just eight more than Mbappe (42). Meanwhile, Benzema finished at 34 points. He shared a screenshot on his Instagram story from one of his fan accounts. The post indicated the achievements by the Real Madrid’s striker from August 2022 till the end of the nominations for award.
It seems like Benzema wanted to indicate that he was more suitable to win the title. He won the 2022 Ballon d'Or award but didn’t featured in the 2022 Fifa World Cup for France due to an injury. France was defeated by Argentina in the final match in a penalty shoot-out.
Messi thanks his teammates after winning the award
After being victorious in the Qatar World Cup and winning the Fifa Player of the year, Messi thanked his teammates for winning the award.
"Wow, this is amazing. It's been a tremendous year and it's an honour to win this award. Without my team-mates, I wouldn't be here," said Messi as quoted by Sportskeeda.
"I achieved the dream I had been hoping for so long. Very few people can achieve that and I have been lucky to do so. It's the most wonderful thing that's happened to me in my career," he further added.
Both Messi and Benzema are having an imperial season so far for their respective club. Messi has scored 17 goals and 16 assists in 28 games for PSG across competitions in the season. Meanwhile, Benzema has 18 goals and five assists in 25 games for Real Madrid
