The 61st match of the Indian Premier League 2023 was played between the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, May 15. GT registered their 9th win of the season as they defeated SRH by 34 runs and became the first team to qualify for the playoffs.

Talking about the match, SRH won the toss and opted to bowl first, the visitors got off to a perfect start as Bhuvneshwar Kumar nipped out Wriddhiman Saha for a duck in the very first over. However, later, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan forged a century partnership by playing some exquisite shots. SRH had a bad day in the field, their overseas bowlers were taken to the cleaners and they were staring down the barrel as the hosts were 147/1 at the end of the 14th over.Β

Gill notched up his maiden IPL ton, but his team failed to even get to 190 after looking set to post a total of around 220. Marco Jansen broke the century stand by removing Sai Sudharsan and GT's big hitters Hardik Pandya, David Miller, and Rahul Tewatia fell in the following three overs. Bhuvneshwar bowled a brilliant final over, where the Titans lost four wickets and managed to add just 2 runs and with this, he also took a fifer.

A brilliant all-round performance by GT

Chasing the target, the SRH top-order disappointed once again as GT speedsters gave a perfect start to the team by dismissing 4 batters inside the powerplay. SRH batters continued their embarrassing performance and lost 7 batters on the score of just 59 runs in the 9th over of the 2nd innings.

However, later SRH wicketkeeper-batter Henrich Klassen and Bhuvneshwar tried hard and stitched a 68-run stand for the 8th wicket but it was too late as GT brought back Shami in the death over and he dismissed Klassen on 64 runs. Bhuvneshawar was also dismissed in the next over by Mohit Sharma as both Shami and Mohit ended their 4-over quota picking up 4 wickets each. With this loss, SRH are out of the tournament and they must be really disappointed by their performance in the league.
