On Sunday, India beat Australia by 99 runs at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. KL Rahul's men posted their highest score against Australia in ODIs. Ahead of the third and final match against the Kangaroos, India has rested opener Shubman Gill and all-rounder Shardul Thakur.

With the World Cup just 10 days away India is being cautious about their players not getting injured. In the first two ODIs, skipper Rohit Sharma and veteran batter Virat Kohli were rested. Now they will return to the squad and play the third and final ODI.

The Men in Blue did not pick their No.1 ODI bowler Mohammed Siraj in the starting XI either. In the second ODI Jasprit Bumrah was even rested with Prasidh Krishna coming back to the squad after a long-prone injury. India will be hoping to get Axar Patel fit ahead of the World Cup.

Shubman Gill's red-hot form continues

Shubman Gill scored a century in Indore in the second ODI against Australia, his sixth overall and fifth in this year. So far in 2023, Gill has scored 1230 runs in 20 innings at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. The opener has been in sensational form. In the first ODI, he gave India the best start they needed alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad. Both the batters scored the fifties and stitched a partnership of 142 runs.

Gill in the second match scored 104 runs off 94 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes. His performances have led to a rise in his place in the Men's ODI rankings, and he is currently placed at No. 2, one spot below Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. With the World Cup approaching, if he continues this form, the 23-year-old will outclass Babar Azam to be the No.1 ODI batter.

After the match, Gill said, "It feels good. We are satisfied as a team, we have the momentum at the right time. It depends on the situation, there’s definitely some confidence. I can cover up later, and that confidence is because I am scoring at the moment. With the way KL (Rahul) and Surya (Suryakumar Yadav) played, they kept the momentum going."
