The 66th match of the Indian Premier League was played between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in Dharamsala on Friday, May 19. PBKS lost the match by 4 wickets and with this loss, their hopes for the playoffs qualification are also ended.
Talking about the match, RR won the toss and opted to bowl first and the decision proved right as they started really well by dismissing Prabhsimran Singh in the very first over of the match, courtesy of a brilliant caught and bowled by Trent Boult. RR continued taking wickets as Navdeep Saini who was playing his first match of the season took his first wicket as he dismissed Atharva Taide in the 4th over.
PBKS skipper Shikhar Dhawan continued his poor form and departed in the 6th over of the first innings by Adam Zampa. Liam Livingstone also failed to produce any heroics this time as he was dismissed by Saini on just 9 runs. However, PBKS's lower middle order took things on their shoulder and helped the team to achieve a monumental total of 187 runs. Jitesh Sharma (44), Sam Curran (49*), and Shahrukh Khan (41) contributed enough to the scoreboard. Saini was the highest wicket-taker for PBKS as he took 3 wickets in his 4 overs quota.
A brilliant all-round performance by RR
Chasing the target, RR once again had a bad start as their star opener Jos Buttler departed in the second over on another duck. But Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal scored half-centuries to get the chase back on track. Shimron Hetmyer played the role of the catalyst in hastening the chase.
The underfire Riyan Parag also chipped in with a couple of sixes. And in the end, Dhruv Jurel put the finishing touches. And with this loss, PBKS are officially out. Rahul Chahar was the only impressive bowler from PBKS as in 3.4 overs, he took 1 wicket and conceded only 28 runs, however, he failed to defend 9 runs in the last over.
