Barbados Royals (BR) beat the defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs (JT) by a six-wicket, in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023. BR won the toss and elected to field first, and it proved to be effective for the team that came in this match after a hefty defeat against Trinbago Knight Riders.
The defending champions' batting first lost early wickets inside the PowerPlay. They made a good recovery batting at the back end of their innings and put in a fighting total of 161 runs, with the courtesy of Shamarh Brooks who scored 78 runs off 41 balls.
Alick Athanaze shines for the Royals
Putting into bat first JT never looked in control as they lost three quick wickets in the powerplay itself. They lost Brandon King, Mckenzie, and Hales in quick succession leaving the Tallawahs teetering at 25/3 at the end of six overs.
Shamarh Brooks and Raymon Reifer settled the innings after the powerplay drama, with a 54-run partnership but Qais Ahmad cleaned up Reifer to keep the Royals in the game. Brooks made 78 runs from 40 balls proved crucial in keeping the Tallawahs in the game. This was helped by Imad Wasimβs late hitting to get the Tallawahs up to 160/7 at the end of their 20 overs.
In reply, they lost both their openers Rahkeem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers in the PowerPlay of the game. But Alick Athanaze came up to the task and made a crucial partnership with Laurie Evans of 89 runs that ensured the Royals entered the final five overs to win the match. Athanze made 76 runs off 48 balls, hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes. But Rovman Powell and Jason Holder saw the Royals home to put them right back in the playoff race.
For last year's champions Chris Green was exceptional though and hardly bowled a loose delivery, while Mohammad Amir was superb with the new ball, getting it to swing markedly in the channel in the powerplay. The Royals are now 5th in the table with 5 points and still have the chance to qualify for the knockouts.
