The Lanka Premier League will take place from December 6 to December 23. The tournament will consist of five teams. Franchises have been named for five cities namely Jaffna, Kandy, Dambulla, Galle and Colombo. The LPL has been spread across three venues which are - Sooriyawewa in Hambantota, the initial phase of the tournament will happen there before it moves to  Pallekele. The latter stages of the tournament will be played at the  Khettarama in Colombo. The format of the tournament will take place in a round robin stage. Out of five teams four of them will end up playing the qualifiers. It will follow a playoff format of the Indian T20 League.

The teams placed first and second will play the first qualifier where they winner out of these two teams will have a direct entry into the final. Then the teams who are placed third and forth will play an eliminator.  The other team who has made it to the final will be determined by another eliminator.

Sri Lanka's economic crisis has led to the postponement of the league which was earlier slated to be held in August. This has been the biggest challenge for the organisers of the League. The matches for the league have been put out but it still remains to be seen as to who will be owning the five franchises. The names of the franchises have also not been disclosed. The League is being jointly conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket and IPG Group who are the official organisers of the tournament.
