The 16th edition of the much-awaited Indian T20 League is set to start on March 31. However, before that, the Punjab-based franchise suffered a big setback as their explosive opener Jonny Bairstow will not be able to participate in the tournament due to an injury. He was bought by the franchise for a whopping amount of INR 6.75 crores. It will be a tough task for the franchise to find a replacement for such an explosive batter.
English batter Bairstow is an explosive batter in all formats of cricket. He has also produced some great performances in the cash-rich league too. However, his decision of not taking part in the tournament could be the Ashes series also as after the injury, he wanted to give all his attention to the preparations for the mega Test series. Bairstow had a successful surgery after the injury and a plate was also inserted in his left leg, but he is yet to be fully fit. However, he will be seen playing for Yorkshire before appearing in the Ashes.
Punjab will face Kolkata in their first match
Bairstow made his Indian T20 League debut in 2019. He has played 39 matches so far and scored 1,291 runs at an average of 35.86. His strike rate is 142.65. He has also scored one century and 9 half centuries. Meanwhile, Punjab will be led by Shikhar Dhawan this time as their former captain Mayank Agarwal was released ahead of the mini-auction. Punjab will start their campaign in the second match of the league, where they will face the two-time champion Kolkata.
For the first time after 2019, the Indian T20 League will be played in a home-away format. Meanwhile, the first match of the richest league in the world will be played between the defending champions Gujarat and the four-time winners Chennai on March 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Chennai-based franchise already started practicing and former Indian skipper MS Dhoni also joined the team’s camp in Chennai.
