Parag's inclusion in the team came as a surprise because he had struggled to make an impact in the current season. In his seven appearances, he had only managed to score 78 runs at a poor average of 16. Despite being considered a top talent and a future star, Parag has yet to fulfill his potential in the IPL. Since his debut in 2019, he has never scored 200 runs in a single edition, with his best performance being 160 runs in his debut season. In the 2022 season, he managed to surpass that tally but has struggled to replicate that success since then.
Parag, not able to translate Vijay Hazare form into IPL
While Parag showed his prowess in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, accumulating 552 runs with an average of 69 and a strike rate of 123, his performances in the IPL have been inconsistent. This has led to doubts about his retention by RR for the 2024 season, especially considering his poor form this year. Despite being a talented cricketer, his lackluster performances have raised questions about his ability to deliver on the big stage.
Former cricketer Irfan Pathan took to Twitter to implore fans not to hate young players like Parag just because they have confidence in their abilities. Pathan's tweet was seen as a show of support for the beleaguered all-rounder, who has been subjected to criticism and trolling from fans across the country.
Riyan Parag's return to the RR lineup and his crucial contribution in the match against Punjab Kings provided a glimmer of hope for the team's playoff aspirations. Despite facing criticism and failing to live up to expectations in the IPL, Parag's talent and potential cannot be denied. Whether he retains his place in the team for the next season remains uncertain, but it is clear that he possesses the skills to succeed and silence his detractors with consistent performances in the future.
Here's how Twitter reacted:Β

First he needs to perform in IPL. He got many chances regularly in ipl but did nothing special in this full season.

Once you perform well you don't need to give any unnecessary statements like he said I can do this I can do that.
