Portugal clashed with Uruguay in a Group H fixture at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar on Tuesday. Manchester United Bruno Fernandes scored twice to help Portugal to a 2-0 win over Uruguay and, thereby, seal a place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo believed that he got the final touch in the first goal when the team took a lead against Uruguay. But the goal was awarded to Fernandes, leaving Ronaldo unhappy. Portugal, eventually, won the match but footage showed that Ronaldo had complained even after the game had ended.

Although he did not do his trademark 'SIUU' style, Ronaldo celebrated his goal, only to find that the giant screen reflected Fernandes' name. The goal would have made Ronaldo the joint-highest goal-scorer in World Cup history for Portugal, but he was denied.

Portuguese Federation set to present evidence

As per the latest development, the Portuguese Football Federation will reportedly present evidence to FIFA to prove Ronaldo should be credited with the opening goal against Uruguay. The federation was desperate to see Ronaldo given the goal.

According to the Daily Mail, Adidas released a statement saying:

“In the match between Portugal and Uruguay, using the Connected Ball Technology housed in Adidas's Al Rihla Official Match Ball, we are able to definitively show no contact on the ball from Cristiano Ronaldo for the opening goal in the game.”

“No external force on the ball could be measured as shown by the lack of ‘heartbeat’ in our measurements and in the attached graphic. The 500Hz IMU sensor inside the ball allows us to be highly accurate in our analysis.”

Now all eyes will be on FIFA if they would address the issue at the earliest and give a clarification on the same. While many were etched to crediting the goal scorer, a few of them pointed out that things were all good between the ousted Red Devils player and Fernandes, given that the legendary player accused a few unnamed players of not wanting him in the club.
