Former India captain Ravi Shastri has backed Shikhar Dhawan for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. He feels Dhawan should be a part of the Indian Team for the mega event as he played an important role for the Indian cricket team before getting injured in the 2019 World Cup.

The veteran opener may be out of the team, but there was a time when he was an important member of the squad. The ignorance of the player by the selection committee has led the former Indian coach to get angry and reprimand the team management.

Shikhar Dhawan does not get the respect he probably deserves: Ravi Shastri

The 61-year-old stated, "Shikhar Dhawan does not get the respect he probably deserves. People have never given Shikhar Dhawan the credit he deserves. He is a wonderful player. When we lost the World Cup semi-finals in the year 2019, the team missed him a lot."

"Having a left-handed batsman in the top order helps you. When the ball swings, it comes in for a right-handed batsman but goes out for a left-handed batsman and it is easier to score runs."

The former head coach explained the reason why he would not include KL Rahul in the squad. He said Star Sports in a panel discussion referring to Rahul, "When you are talking of a player who has not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the playing eleven of Asia Cup, you are asking little too much of the player himself. And then you are talking keeping when the guy has come from a knee injury, the range of movement, things like (that). That is a no, no straight."

Shastri also wants Tilak Varma to be picked for the Asia Cup. He wants to see three left-handers in the top seven, including Ravindra Jadeja. The Indian selectors have consistently ignored Dhawan now for a considerable amount of time.

He was snubbed off from the Ireland series and the Asian Games too. The left-handed opener has been fairly impressive. He has played in 167 ODIs, 68 T20 matches, and 34 Test matches. He has scored 2315 runs, 6793 runs, and 1759 runs over these periods. He has scored 24 hundred in international contests.
