Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni, who won his 5th IPL trophy after defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final of the 16th edition of the league, made it clear that he might be playing for CSK in the next season as well. However, he said that he took this decision after seeing the love and support of the fans and he wants to give a gift to the fans by playing one more season. Earlier, it was expected that this would be his last season.
Talking about IPL 2023, Dhoni was troubled by knee pain throughout the season and now it is being said that he will undergo surgery for his knee injury. However, no decision has been taken regarding this till now. That being said, surgery is the only option to make him fully fit. If he decides to undergo surgery, the rehabilitation could take a long time and thus his availability in IPL 2024 could be in jeopardy. However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan revealed that Dhoni might undergo knee surgery in order to remain fit for the next season.
"Yes, it is true that Dhoni (Mahi) will be taking medical advice for his left knee injury and accordingly decide. If surgery is advised, it can only be ascertained after reports come out, it will be completely his call," Viswanathan was quoted as saying by The Economic Times.
It will be completely Dhoni's call: Kasi Viswanathan
One of the members of CSK coaching staff and former Australian batter, Mike Hussey also said in one of his statements that Dhoni is not fully fit. Despite this, he tries to give 100 per cent to his team and this was the reason why he used to come out to bat in the 19th or 20th over throughout the IPL. However, the effects of his injury never came in the way of his wicketkeeping. The way he dismissed Shubman Gill in the final match is proof of this. Viswanathan also said that the decision on the surgery is all up to Dhoni.
"Frankly, we are not even thinking along those lines as we haven't reached that stage. It will be completely Dhoni's call. But I can tell you in CSK, we haven't entertained those thoughts. I have been associated with CSK since season 1 and we have never deviated from our process. The key has been to keep things simple and explain to every player what is expected of them. In our franchise, the skipper keeps everything uncomplicated," Viswanathan said.
