When it comes to Test cricket, former England captain Joe Root is one of the most consistent batters. He has continued his consistency in the ongoing 1st Test of the Ashes 2023 against Australi, which is being played at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Root smashed a breathtaking century in the 1st innings and played another outstanding knock of 46 runs in the 2nd innings.

Meanwhile, Root also produced multiple orthodox strokes throughout his knock during the 2nd innings. He tried to play the reverse scoop shot against Scott Boland multiple times and one of the shots went for a six over Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey’s head on Day 4. Many fans have reacted to the shot, some praised it, while some fans cited that this is running the importance of Test cricket.

Before coming to bat on Day 4, England was in a troubling situation as they lost their 2 wickets on the score of just 28 runs with a small lead of 35. However, Root transferred the pressure right on the Australian bowlers as he went behind Australian fast bowlers with an aggressive approach.

Brilliant bowling performance by Australia

England quickly passed 70 thanks to Root's magnificent cut strokes to short-pitched deliveries as he remained aggressive and stitched a 50-run partnership with Ollie Pope. However, as Root was nearing his half-century, he was tricked by Australian veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon on 46 runs. It was a tossed-up delivery on the pads from Lyon, Root backed away and danced out for a big lofted shot towards the leg side but the ball turned further inwards and Carey behind the wicket easily collected the ball and stumped it which left Root falling 4 short of his fifty.

England suffered another loss in the 34th over as Harry Brook also departed on the score of 46 runs. Brook tried to release the tension with a pull shot to a ball that wasn't very short. He ended up pulling it at a catchable height to the right of Marnus Labuschagne at short mid-wicket, who dived to take a splendid catch and the bowler was once again Lyon who picked his 2nd wicket of the innings.
