Leon Edwards retained his UFC welterweight championship title against Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC 2866 last month. And after that, many speculations have been made that Edwards will face Colby Covington next, however, the champion himself refused to fight against him and didn’t announce the next contender.
Meanwhile, Covington, recently explained why he deserves to get a title shot against Edwards. However, many fans and UFC fighter believes that he doesn’t deserve to get the title shot. But Covington opined that his last fights were against top athletes. He even mentioned that nobody wants to see someone else rather than him in the main events.
"Look at my resume, man. All my last fights, they're not just contenders I've been beating, I've been beating first-ballot Hall-of-Famers. Last fights, five world champions I've beaten in my last fights. Headlining pay-per-views, selling fights, no one wants to see anybody more in the division than they want to see me fight. Colby 'Chaos' Covington is the welterweight division and I can't wait to get my undisputed title this summer."
The NCAA Division I wrestler's previous four contests included victories over Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal as well as two defeats against Kamaru Usman. This is a key factor in why some supporters aren't persuaded that he merits a crack at the crown.
Edwards doesn't want to fight with Covington
Colby Covington was commended by Dana White after weighing in as a backup for the fight between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman the last time out, and he insisted that he will be handed the next title shot.
However, 'Rocky' wasn't a big fan of 'Chaos' being the next in line for his title and has made his feelings clear on multiple times, despite being open to all challenges. Edwards disapproves of Covington's inaction and thinks that instead of sitting about waiting for his chance to come up as it appears he has done, Covington should work for his chance at the title.
