India will be playing Australia in the T20I series after their loss in the ODI World Cup final against the same opposition. The Men in Blue have rested the senior players who were part of the World Cup except Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan. The former will lead the side in the bilateral series. Team India performed sensationally in the mega event winning 10 matches in a row.
The selection committee, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, chose a strong squad, primarily comprised of players who helped India win the Asian Games gold medal in men's cricket. Shreyas Iyer will be the vice-captain for the final two T20Is. Rinku Singh, made his international debut earlier this year on a tour of Ireland. Tilak Varma and Yashavsi Jaiswal have also rejoined the Indian squad.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has been selected as the team's vice-captain for the first three games. During India's Asian Games campaign in Hangzhou, Gaikwad impressed everyone with his leadership abilities. The T20I series will be practised for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024.
Who will be the new coach of India?
VVS Laxman will be the coach in the upcoming series as Rahul Dravid's tenure with Team India ended on Sunday. At the post-match conference he was asked whether he continue or step down, he replied, "I haven't thought about it. I've just come off a game. I had no time to think about this and no time to reflect on this. Yeah, I will when I get the time to do that. At this point, I was completely focused on this campaign and there was nothing else on my mind. And I haven't given any other thought to what happens in the future."
"To be honest, I am not someone who's going to judge and analyse myself. I was proud to work with you. I think the players that I worked with over the last two years in all the formats, it's been a privilege. Honestly, I haven't thought about it. I think all our campaigns, all our energies were focused on this match, focused on this tournament, and focused till here. And I haven't given it any thought or I have no plans, I have had no plans of what's going to happen in the future."
India's squad for T20I:
Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vice-captain), Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dubey, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar
