Former India captain Sachin Tendulkar has been elected as the National Icon of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to encourage greater voter participation in the electoral process. Tendulkar will join hands with the national election body to create awareness and educate the citizens of the country to vote.
A memorandum of understanding will be signed between the Master Blaster and the poll panel on Wednesday. As part of the three-year agreement, he will spread voter awareness. Through the partnership, the Election Commission seeks to address the challenges of urban and youth apathy towards voting.
This collaboration would mark a significant step towards leveraging Sachin Tendulkar's unparalleled impact: Election Commission
The Election Commission said in a statement, "This collaboration would mark a significant step towards leveraging Sachin Tendulkar's unparalleled impact with the youth for increasing voters' participation in the forthcoming elections, especially in general elections (to Lok Sabha), 2024."
The Election Commission has been associating itself with renowned Indians from various fields by designating them as its "national icons" to motivate voters to participate in the electoral process. Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Shri Anup Chandra Pandey and Shri Arun Goel will also be present at the occasion. ECI hopes to leverage Tendulkar’s popularity among the Indian youth to increase "voters participation in the forthcoming elections, especially in General Elections 2024."
Last year, the ECI had recognized actor Pankaj Tripathi as a national icon. Earlier, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the likes such as MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan, and Mary Kom had been the Election Commission's national icons. This initiative serves to inspire citizens to engage in the electoral process.
