The former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has picked Indian opener Shubman Gill as his 'Young Player of the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup.' The young batter has been the highest runscorer and has also risen to the top 4 ODI batters in the world in just a few months.

He has an ODI average of 62 and is one of the few batsmen to have scored a double century in only 27 ODIs. The right-handed batter has amassed 750 runs in 12 games at an average of 68.18, including three centuries and two fifties, this year so far. The Gujarat Titans batter has also won the orange cap in IPL 2023 by smashing 890 runs.

Kallis told the Cricket Governing Body, "For me, the young player of the World Cup will be Shubman Gill. What a talent, not much more needs to be said about him, except to think I was going to enjoy watching him bat. One of my favourite players to watch. I was lucky enough to work with him at KKR and see him develop, looking forward to seeing him have a good World Cup."

Kallis served as a batting coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015. Gill played four seasons for KKR before moving to Gujarat Titans. The Punjab-born batter recently has scored just 126 runs in three games against West Indies, with best score of 85. India won the series 2-1.

In 2022, he scored 638 runs in 12 matches at an average of 70.89, including one ton and four half-centuries. He might be a strong contender for Asia Cup Player of the Tournament in 2023. He will next be in action against arch-rivals Pakistan at Pallekale in Sri Lanka on September 2.

Gill and Rohit have forged an impressive partnership in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), accumulating a remarkable 685 runs at an average of 76.11. Recently Gill shared his thoughts on his partnership with Rohit, he said, “It feels great to be able to open up with him (Rohit), especially knowing that all the focus is on him. He’s someone who likes the other batters to go and just express himself and play the way I want to play the game."
