Similar to how European leagues dominate the football landscape, many fans and cricket experts have been expecting the slow demise of the international game as franchise cricket leagues across the globe continue to grow. The first significant indication of this trend was when Jason Roy chose to accept a lucrative offer from the Major League Cricket (MLC) team LA Knight Riders rather than renew his contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The top cricket organisation plans to establish two significant rules that will be applicable to franchise leagues all over the world in order to allay this anxiety. Roy eventually revealed that it was fake news and spoke openly about it.

“Following a bit of unwanted speculation over the last 24 hours, I wanted to clarify that I am not and never will ‘walk away from England.’ Representing my country continues to be my proudest moment as a professional cricketer. I hope to play for England for many more years, that remains my priority.”

“I’ve had clear and supportive conversations with the ECB about participating in Major League Cricket. The ECB were happy with me playing in the competition as long as they didn’t have to pay me for the remainder of the contractual year.”

Apex cricket council to follow IPL rule

The Indian Premier League will be the model for cricket's regulatory body, which will only permit four foreign players to be included in the starting XI, according to a story in the British newspaper The Telegraph. For every player they sign, the franchises must also pay a specific price to their respective national boards.

The four-player limit per franchise is in response to the International League T20 (ILT20) rule, which allowed nine foreign players in the starting XI and was played in the United Arab Emirates. According to the rumors, the rumoured T20 league being created in Saudi Arabia will have a like structure. The risk of players forgoing their national contracts to play for foreign teams has decreased as a result of this restriction.
