Finally, once again India have won the SAFF Championship title. The Hosts this time around, India have clinched the Championships title for the ninth time as they beat Kuwait 5-4 in a very exciting penalty shootout after both the sides were deadlocked for a scoreline of 1-1 inside the allocated 120 minutes in the summit clash here on Tuesday.
The scoreline remained 4-4 after five rounds of penalty kicks, thus the sudden death system was used. Mahesh Naorem scored, but Kuwait captain Khaled Hajiah's attempt was saved by diving Sandhu, setting off a raucous celebration among the home crowd and at the India dugout. Prior to Lallianzuala Chhangte's equalizing goal in the 39th minute, Shabaib Al Khaldi had given Kuwait the lead in the 14th minute.
The Indian football team certainly lived up to the expectation of their and played some quality football to ensure that they turn out victorious. Despite all the football actions, one of the major incidents which were aesthetic was during India’s victory lap, when over 26,000 fans were singing Vande Mataram at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium as the India team also celebrated, cheered, and prayed with each and every heart in the country throughout the tournament.

Sunil Chhetri, the India skipper certainly led the attack from the front as he was also awarded a golden boot which is given to the player with the most number of goals. Chhetri scored six goals throughout the competition. Considering this scintillating run throughout the competition, the 39-year-old was awarded the Most Valuable Player award for his terrific contribution to India’s terrific win.
After the game, Chhetri reacted to this win by saying that he was very much happy that everyone on the team chipped when it mattered the most. The star India striker also pointed out that Kuwait are not that easy side to play against and it was a perfect end to this tournament, securing a win against a quality opponent.
