The 42nd match of the Indian Premier League 2023 was played between the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 30. The contest also marked a significant landmark in the tournament's history as it was the 1000th game of IPL and MI made it count as they won the match by 6 wickets.
Talking about the match, RR won the toss and opted to bat first. Their young left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his red-hot form and provided a cracking start to the team in the powerplay. However, Jos Buttler once again failed to provide anything special to the team and departed after scoring 18 runs.Â
They lost two more wickets in the form of skipper Sanju Samson and Devdutt Padikkal in the next few overs but Jaiswal continued his rich vein of form. Jofra Archer bowled one quiet over towards the last stages but barring that, MI bowlers were scratching their heads as Jaiswal smashed a brilliant century and scored 124 runs off just 62 deliveries which included 16 fours and 8 sixes.
Brilliant finish by Tim David
Chasing the target, MI didn't have a great start as their skipper and birthday boy Rohit Sharma failed to make it a big day for him as he departed after scoring just 3 runs. Left-arm pacer Sandeep Sharma bowled a knuckleball and Rohit failed to read it and the ball ended up hitting on the off-stump. Ishan Kishan was ticking the scoreboard but with a low strike rate.
However, all-rounder Cameron Green accelerated and helped the team to get quick runs. But the veteran off-spinner R Ashwin dismissed both the batters and put pressure of MI. Later, the no.1 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav arrived and shifted gears from the very first ball and smashed a quick half-century.
Tilak Verma accompanied him very well but Suryakumar was caught brilliantly by Sandeep in the 16th over of the 2nd innings. However, Australian star all-rounder Tim David had different plans as he smashed 3 consecutive sixes in the last over and helped the team achieve the target with 3 balls to spare.
