In an enthralling IPL 2023 encounter, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 49 runs at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday. After winning the toss, KKR captain Eoin Morgan decided to bowl first, but the decision backfired as CSK posted a mammoth total of 235/4 in their 20 overs.

CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway started the innings in a positive manner, scoring runs at a brisk pace. The pair added 56 runs for the first wicket in just 5 overs. After Gaikwad’s dismissal for 35, Ajinkya Rahane joined Conway at the crease and took the game away from KKR with a blistering innings. Rahane smashed 71 off just 29 balls, hitting 5 fours and 5 sixes in his knock. Shivam Dube also played a quickfire innings of 50 off 21 balls, which included 5 sixes. Ravindra Jadeja provided the finishing touches to the innings, scoring 18 off just 8 balls, as CSK finished with a daunting total of 235/4 in their 20 overs.

In reply, KKR started off on a disastrous note, losing N Jagadeesan and Sunil Narine cheaply. Venkatesh Iyer, who had scored a half-century in the last match, failed to replicate his performance and made just 20 off 20 balls. Nitish Rana looked good in his innings of 27 off 20 balls, but he too could not convert his start into a big score. It was Jason Roy, who kept KKR in the hunt with a sensational innings of 61 off just 26 balls, hitting 5 fours and 5 sixes in his knock. However, with wickets falling at regular intervals at the other end, KKR's chase eventually fell short and they could only manage 186/8 in their 20 overs.

For CSK, Sam Curran was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 3 wickets for 27 runs in his 4 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali also chipped in with 2 wickets each, as CSK secured a comfortable victory.

With this win, CSK moved up to second place in the points table, while KKR slipped to sixth place. The two teams will face each other once again on Tuesday, in what promises to be another exciting encounter.
