The India women's Cricket team won Gold in the Asian Games after they beat Sri Lanka by 19 runs, on Monday, in the finals of the ongoing Asian Games 2023. This was India's second gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games. The Men's team will play on 3rd October.

This is the first-ever gold for India in cricket at the Asian Games. India also set a new world record and clinched gold in the men's 10 air rifle team event on Monday. Defending 117 runs on a slow track, the Indian bowlers performed superbly restricting the Lankan women for just 97 runs.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss for India and opted to bat first in the final. Opener Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues then stitched a crucial 73-run partnership to get India back in the game on a difficult and slow track.

Titas Sadhu shines for India

Batting first the Women in Blue lost an early wicket of opener Shafali Varma. But Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues then built a 73-run partnership. The former scored 46 runs off 45 balls, smashing five boundaries and a solitary six. Rodrigues scored 42 runs off 40 deliveries but she wasn't supported by her teammates as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, Harmanpreet, Pooja Vastrakar, and Amanjot Kaur got out cheaply. India could only post a target of 117 runs.

In reply, Titas Sadhu struck with the new ball, dismissing both openers captain Chamari Athapaththu and Anushka Sanjeewani, while also picking up Vishmi Gunaratne, leaving Sri Lanka at 14 for 3. Hasini Perera and Nilakshi de Silva formed a decent 36-run partnership. Perera scored 25 runs off 22 balls, while De Silva fell to Vastrakar who dismissed her after scoring 23 runs off 34 deliveries. They ended their innings with 97 for 8 on the board after 20 overs, falling short by 19 runs.

After the win, India women’s chief selector Neetu David, congratulated the Indian team on their historic achievement. She said, "We are very happy. There can’t be any better feeling than winning the gold medal. It’s a big achievement for women’s cricket in India. The girls did lot of hard work."
