In a dominating finale at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Sunday, Australia emerged victorious over India by 79 runs to clinch their fourth Under-19 World Cup title. The Aussies, having previously triumphed in 1988, 2002, and 2010, showcased their cricketing prowess in a high-stakes encounter.
Australia's innings, led by captain Hugh Weibgen, set a competitive target of 254 for India. Weibgen's solid knock of 48 and valuable contributions from Harry Dixon (42), Harjas Singh (55), and Oliver Peake (46*) propelled the Aussies to a challenging total of 253 for 7 in 50 overs. The Indian bowlers faced a tough challenge, with Namanย Tiwari and Raj Limbani picking up crucial wickets.
Limbani got three wickets, including wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Hicks, while Naman dismissed both Dixon and Harjas. Their amazing bowling effort failed as Australia propelled to a competitive total. However, for India, batting was more disheartening than the bowling performance.
India failed to put up a show with bats
In response, India's batting lineup faltered in the chase. Despite Adarsh Singh's resilient 47 and contributions from Musheer Khan (22) and Murugan Abhishek (42), the team struggled to build substantial partnerships. Australia's Mahli Beardman and Raf MacMillan wreaked havoc, claiming three wickets each, while Callum Vidler and Charlie Anderson chipped in with crucial dismissals.
Uday Saharan, the Indian captain, also failed as the required run rate kept escalating. Eventually, India was bowled out for 174 in 43.5 overs. Australia's bowling unit, led by Beardman and MacMillan, showcased discipline and control, restricting India and securing the title.
The victory marked Australia's dominance in youth cricket, adding another accolade to their Under-19 World Cup triumphs. India, despite their valiant efforts, fell short in the chase, unable to match the excellence displayed by the Australian team. The final served as a fitting conclusion to the tournament, highlighting the skills and resilience of young talents on the global stage.
